Blog 2014 Wednesday April 30th – A major accomplishment.
30 April 2014 | Viaduct Marina Auckland NZ
Nice but chilly
Yesterday I spent most of the day pulling all of the fuel lines off of the genset and chasing the fuel line back down from the genset to the fuel tank. After all that and finding really nothing wrong I proceeded to remove the pick-up tube assembly from the tank and see if there was a reason for so much friction in trying to bring the fuel up to the genset. Ok there just has to be something either pinching or kinking the fuel line. After spending several more hours, sucking, blowing, moving, etc and finding nothing out of the ordinary, I finally pulled a scuba tank out and used the air to blow the line clear. Nothing showed up that would indicate a blockage but the fuel did look very crappy. Ok no real answer.
So I bought a new fuel lift pump from the Northern Lights distributor the day before and then installed it yesterday after cleaning all the lines to make sure there was nothing clogging them. Late in the day after installing the new pump and pumping away on the little pump handle nothing showed up at the filter bowl. Could not even get an couple of squirts to dribble into the bulb. At the end of the business day here in Auckland (4:30-5:00), I ride the bike over to one of the chandleries and buy a squeeze bulb to try to lift the fuel to the pump. Give it a try at 5:30 and pumped away until near 6:00pm. Gave up, cleaned up, put tools away and called it an evening.
The Onan Generator distributor earlier suggested an electric fuel pump. He had one but could not confirm the voltage so suggested a trip to an auto parts store to buy one. He suggested that the closest one was called Repco which ended up being about 12 miles away. A next day task.
We planned our departure from the boat to catch a convenient bus to Grey Lynn and the Repco store at 0900. It worked out perfectly because there was supposed to be a canvas store near where we needed to go so we could kill two birds with one bus ride. Got the fuel pump, came up short on the canvas but then did score at the Countdown grocery store before catching the return bus.
Got back and went right to work. Lisa fixed us some lunch while I connected the new electric fuel pump. Had lunch then connected the wires haphazardly to the battery and after a couple minutes I watched the fuel filter bowl fill, and then the slowing of the pump because of back pressure. Kicked the generator start switch over and listened to her start right up. That was the accomplishment for the day. But not done yet.
Nope we need some canvas to repair the dodger where the snaps have pulled through. Back on a bus for another 45 minute ride to Sunnynook bus stop near a major shopping area. Found the canvas store, bought our goods and then proceeded to peruse many of the other shops to finally end up at Jaycor to buy a few electronic parts. The we needed to make the two mile walk back to the bus stop to catch a return bus. By the time we arrived back at Orcinius it was nearly 6 pm. Called it a day, cleaned things up a bit and proceeded to make dinner.
So the bright sides of the day were, genset problem appears to be solved, have the canvas and snaps to repair dodger and Lisa informs me that we made 17,630 steps to make our by foot journey beyond the bus trips of 8 miles hoofing it. I should sleep well tonight.
Sorry no pictures.
Cheers
