Day two NZ to Fiji

12 May 2014 | 33 57.27'S:176 35.59'E, 230 Miles NNE Auckland heading for Minerva Reef South
John
We had a good run in the past 24 hours but all under the steel genny. We managed to make 167 NM directly towards Minerva Reef South. That showed us with just under 650 to go. The wind has died down and we are getting trapped in a high pressure with little to no wind. Earlier today we had enough angle that I was able to use the genoa for about and hour and then it turned on our nose again so I put it away. Now for the last hour we have a full main and genoa out and are motor sailing at 7 knots over water but not directly towards Minerva but off 15 degrees.

I am still trying to figure out what the fuel usage is now that both engines have been overhauled. Haven't got a good handle yet but if I figured the same as before they were worked on then we wouldn't have enough to motor all the way to Fiji so we need some favorable winds to push us along. I suspect the engines are considerably more efficient because the other day after arriving in Auckland while still having trouble with the genset, I pulled the pickup tube out of the fuel tank and I figured I should have just short of half a tank. Not so, I probably had close to ¾ tank. It also proved it yesterday when we were getting fuel. Where my calculations showed we needed about 190 liters in each tank the starboard only took 45 and the port took 150 and that was after motoring with both engines from Whangarei to Great Barrier Island and then into Auckland.

Got some chores done today also, replaced the thermostat in the genset, and fired up the watermaker which seems to have stopped leaking. The nicer thing is it is producing over 30 gals an hour. Got two fishing lines in the water and then when the wind died and we were trying to just sail we floated over one of them and it was gone.

Sometime this morning one of the albatross' decided to make a bombing run at the boat and splattered chemical stains all over the port bow. Covered nearly the whole thing. Now it is going to take some real elbow grease or a very caustic acid to get the stains out.

Things are going good so will blog again tomorrow.
