Back Under Way

14 May 2014 | 31 42.40'S:177 58.32'E, 345 Miles NNE Auckland heading for Minerva Reef South
John
Well after a day and a half of absolutely no wind we finally got a little push about 8 tonight. We are under jib only doing about 4.5-5 kts and still heading for Minerva. There is supposed to be a fairly strong blow moving into the reef areal come this Friday and Saturday so we plan on keeping our pace at about 5 kts so as to reach the reef sometime Sunday or Monday. As we move further North and pick up more gribs we will see if our plan will come to fruition or if we need to push directly to Fiji. Weather looks like we will get a little rain over the night and shows that the strongest winds in our passage to be early this morning at ~25kts but on our butt.

For all you that make comments on our blog site, we are unable to view those until we reach Fiji because I had turned off the forward from our regular email to our at sea email. But not to worry we will read and comment on each when we reach Fiji sometime end of next week.

The flat calm gave Lisa and I some more time to sort through more of our individual left ove tasks. Lisa was back at the inventory of our stores and sorting through some of our on board movies for our next movie night. The last one, the night before last, didn't turn out so good. Couldn't get the big computer screen to have enough volume and the movies weren't all that good. So now she has chased down an audio cable and is able to plug the computer into our Bose speaker set for some great folume. With Walt's help, I was able to track down why our starboard engine wasn't charging the batteries. It seems when the engine was reinstalled the alternator and starter battery were reversed. That caused the alternator exciter output to be damaged and so the alternator would put out a charge voltage. I swapped the wire for where they were intended to go and gave it a try. It was then that we discovered the exciter wire being damaged. Temporarily fixed that by running small ju mper from the start to the alternator for the exciter feed. Works good temporarily but will need to either replace the alternator or fix the exciter.

All for now. Under sail, jib only doing a steady 5kts.
