The night before Landfall

21 May 2014 | 17 28.95'S:179 34.38'E, May 21 2014 - 80 south of Savusavu
John
So I am sure most everyone wants to know how Uncle Wally handled the 1300 mile plus crossing from New Zealand to Fiji. Well the picture tells a lie of a thousand words. Yep it is a scam. He did great. Or at least we think he did. Really not once did we catch him truly Pu-ing over the side. The picture is a ploy taken just at sunset as we are sipping on our sundowners.

What a beautiful night. We are now 11 days at sea and will reach our destination of Savusavu in the morning, around 1000. Not that it should have really taken us the 11 days but when you figure in the fact we decided to float on a very flat calm ocean for nearly two days and then continue towards Minerva Reef in a gale, bucking the wind and seas on the nose for another two days at about 1 or less knots in the wrong direction that is four days that could have been productive in reaching our next port. So what, it really wasn't that bad and it could have been a lot worse... Like wind always on the nose.

We will make landfall early in the morning of the 21st, Thursday May 2014 at Savusavu. So just as we started out motor sailing we are ending this little journey doing the same. Winds are very light and to make sure we don't have to wait until after the weekend to check in we decided to pour a little diesel into the South Pacific by running our steel genny. As I write this we are just a little over 80 miles from Savusavu.

We haven't been so lucky catching fish. Other than the Dorado we caught a week ago we have only lost a couple of lures and two full hand lines. Not a very productive fishing adventure. I have to assume the loss of one of the handlines was to a darn big fish as it broke the 500lb test line at the snubber end and took the whole line and cut the 3/8" snubber rubber line.

Well that is about all to share tonight so will end it here and wake my relief and what a beautiful relief she is.

Cheers

John
