Landfall - Mariners Term not a grounding!

22 May 2014 | 17 28.95'S:179 34.38'E, Copra Shed Marina - Savusavu Fiji
John
We officially made land fall today but we really saw our first speck of land yesterday morning and traversed through the Islands all day and night until we rounded the corner of the Cousteau Resort. We are tucked away safely on a mooring buoy owned and rented by the Copra Shed Marina. We arrived at the marina around 1030 this morning and started the check in process.

It took us about an hour or so before the Biosecurity and Health department came and finished with us. Nothing major just wanted to let us know about any diseases that have become prevelant such as Ghange fever and to let us know it was ok to have our fruit and vegetables as long as we only consumed them on the boat. The health official said it was ok to take down our quarantine flag down and in most all other countries that is the sign we can go ashore. We were left with the impression we had completely cleared into Fiji. We headed to shore with a load of dirty boat towels and to pay up for the Health and Bio. When we landed at the Copra Shed the boat taxi driver came over to us and told us in a bit of a fluster that we should not be off our boat as the customs and immigration have not checked us in.

Ok so we got a head start on the boat towel laundry but after the taxi said we weren't supposed to be off our boat we high tailed it back to the dinghy and to Orcinius where we spent the next 2 and 1/2hrs sitting on Orcinius with no wind and a blazing sun. Temperatures hovered near 90 degrees and we weren't very pleasant. Fiji lunch break is from 1300 to 1400 so it wasn't until after 1400 that the customs official finally came over to the boat. She was a very nice lady and said she would be taking care of both customs and immigration. After filling out the paperwork and her consuming her juice drink and a chocolate chip cookie she said adoo and departed with a smile and the announcement it was OK for us to depart the boat and go ashore.

So that we did. We went ashore and chased down some cash and a new Vodafone chip for our wideband transceiver. We walked from the marina to the far east end of the town and then back to the far west end of town without going to the commercial warf. Had a beer at a nice place and then headed back towards town and dinner at the Copra Shed marina Captains Café dinner house. It turned out to be absolutely great food. After paying he bill we jump back into our dinghy and headed towards Orcinius.

And so here I am doing a blog update. Enjoy. We will probably be shipping Uncle Wally out of Fiji the first week of June and then Lisa and I will take our leisure doing some cruising until our friends from Charisma catch up and our granddaughters show up in July. We also have Lisa's sister and brother-in-law showing up the two weeks prior to my granddaughters so the month of July is full. Next couple of weeks is going to be consumed with trying to show Uncle Wally some dive sites on an Island called Tavaune.

OK! Moving on it is getting quite late! Somewhere around 8pm and past all our bedtimes. Or at least bedtimes on watches. Now that we are here at anchor we all will probably hit the hay in the next 30 minutes and get a good full nights sleep. Uncle Wally had done excellent as a watch stander and has been a pleasure having aboard. Now for an evening of good byes'

Good Bye! Good Bye! Good Bye! For Now!
