What a day.

We left a little bay just north of where the Manta Ray Resort was located. We went up there yesterday to get out of the SSE winds that had been steadily increasing to +-20 Kts. It has been a little bit of a reverse weather phinominon with the winds picking up early in the AM and setteling down around noon for 4-5 hours then picking back up again in the afternoon.

We had 40 miles to travel to get back to Port Denarau. Trouble was it was directly into the wind. So the GRIB showed ~10-15 knots on the nose across the whole area between the Yasawas and the main island. We set the alarm for 0530 to kick the coffe pot on and wake Abby for some sea sick pills. The dawn light started to break just before 0600 so Lisa and I with coffee in hand started the anchor weighing process. By 0610 we were free and heading south on the lee side of a couple islands. Not too bad, a couple gusts to 15 spaced about 5 minutes apart. We were two miles from going through a pass between the island and heading to the open sea between them and the mainland. It is now about 0630 and the wind had picked up to a steady 15 knots on the nose and by the time were were 10 miles into our journey it was blowing a steady 20 gusting to 28. Of course with the increase in the winds we get an increase int he wave chop.

The GRIB showed a slackening of the winds around 1100 to about 10 knots, especially if we could make some Easting. A direct path back to Denarau made us hobby horse into the seas and at times burrying the bows into the waves with a big splash that sent large sprays all the way up to the upper helm. We now decide to take a 20 degree angle to the waves so as not to bang quite so hard. Not pleasant but we know it is only supposed to get worse on Saturday so we continue forward.

Abby was the only one who took any type of sea sickness pills so she was quite asleep most of the journey. Caitlin and Hanna plugged their ears with their ipods. Caitlin read a book and Hanna read and played solitare. They all did great.

The further east we made and closer to noon made the GRIB prediction plausable. Finally it layed down with the winds at a steady 10-12 knots. We unfurled the genoa and managed to make a steady 7.3 knots, albeit 25 degrees off our rum line but still held a 6.2 vmg. By mid afternoon, Port Denarau was just 8 miles away when the wind began to increase. Eventually we were in the effects of the lee of the land and we managed to point directly to the port and managed only a moderate chop. We pulled into the port and hooked up to our mooring buoy by 1430. I launched the big dinghy and kicked back for an hour before Lisa and I headed ashore for showers.

After our return we tidied up and got dressed for dinner. By 1830 we were back in the dinghy and heading for shore and dinner. It was the girl's choice so we ate at the Hard Rock Cafe and then proceeded directly to the Ice Cream Ship two doors downl.

We are all back to the boat. It is 2100 and I am thinking about bed. Long day!

All for now. For the Moms and Dads of my three granddaughters, they will be home in a couple days.

Cheers,

John
