John
Ok for all you sailors and friends, we made it to Christmas Island this morning and checked in with half of the inhabitants. Customs, immigration etc, etc, etc... Now for all the sailors.... we are on a lee shore!!! Ok this lee shore is quite precarious because just two days ago a 47 foot Benetau monohul slipped their anchor in a heavy swell while the owner and two crew were ashore checking out to head to HI. They sailed in from the Cook Islands and the owner is a Canadian. Not a pretty sight. She is laying on her starboard hull with the stern ashore and the bow bounding up and down in the waves. All aboard are safe as they were ashore. There is a fairly large hole in her side that a 3" gas powered pump cannot keep up with. Locals said the owner took $1500 Australian dollars for it and has plane ticket out this Tuesday.
Erie feeling seeing the sight so when we set the hook (anchor) we set it in 35 feet of water much to my dislike (I like 20 or less) but the admiral has her way and we set a 6:1 scope so almost all our ground tackle (chain) is in the water. We are not quite lee as the wind has us parallel to the shore 90% of the time which of course causes us to bob port to starboard and back.
We also have an anchor alarm set for 75 feet so if we swing beyond that the alarm will go off. We also set a wind speed alarm at 21 knots. So any gust that hits that magic number will cause the alarm to go off.
And now the final part, we have an automatic anchor watch. Yep, Lisa because she probably won't get any sleep tonight. We have until next Tuesday for all you but those at Christmas before we can depart. So I suspect Lisa may be just a bit cranky by then.
There is alway good news and bad news.....Bad news is there may be internet here through TKSL (telephone) but they closed at noon today so we could not buy a sim card and since next week is a holiday here (Independance Day) they probably won't be open until the following.... so no good internet unti Hawaii.
Also since you have not seen a blog in a while, I suggest you try reading a little further. It was not that we weren't blogging but after losing my computer to the wave that entered the hatch and then loading software on a new computer that of course had to have something else go wrong.....i.e... sailblogs remote password had a type...q instead of an a. So enjoy our last dozen or so days.
