Foiled Again!

08 March 2010 | Rodriguez Key
The last week has been a blur of activity as we got ready to cross to the Bahamas. Finally, a decent weather window appeared and we were determined to take full advantage. So all systems were checked, all tanks were filled (fuel and water), final provisions were stowed, bikes were reloaded once again, final laundry was done, good byes were said, routes were planned and plotted. The mooring lines were dropped at 8.00am and we were off! After waiting for five weeks we dared hope that we might make it back to those tropical islands. It was a beautiful day, a warm sun was shining, the wind was light and the seas were calm. Our plan was to travel East up the Hawk Channel, anchor for a few hours and then cross the Gulf Stream overnight to reach the Great Bahama Banks by Tuesday morning. Sadly, this was not to be......Mid-afternoon, our always reliable chart plotter locked up. Suddenly we had no means of navigation, no radar, no AIS - no nothing!!!! After much cursing and gnashing of teeth Tom was able to reboot and bring the system up again - but it was not fully functional and certainly did not appear reliable. To increase our frustration, our back-up GPS also crashed half an hour after switching it on. We really had no choice other than to abandon the crossing. It was a tough choice as we know a lot of cruisers navigate the seas with far less technology than we have come to rely on. But for us, our comfort level involves a certain reliance on electronics. When we outfitted Osprey we went to considerable expense to install updated navigation equipment including Radar and AIS. At this point we are not able to continue without some form of operational GPS. We made it up to Rodriguez Key just before sunset and anchored for the night. We did not sleep very well.
