We finally passed mile zero of the ICW today and were happy to see it in our wake.
We spent Sunday hiding out from thunderstorms in our favorite anchorage at Broad Creek - even if the wind is howling there is barely a ripple inside the creek - we love it! Then on Monday morning we made a break for it and scooted up to Coinjock, tied up to the face dock there and took care of laundry (me), engine and transmission oil changes (Tom). Having done these vital chores we rewarded ourselves with dinner at the restaurant which was excellent - one of the best meals we have eaten out on this trip. Yesterday saw us leaving the dock at sparrow fart and we made it to the free dock at Great Bridge by noon. Having tied up here we walked to the nearby Fresh Market and replenished our food lockers. This morning we were up early again and slogged thorugh the last hurdles of the ICW in the form of the Great Bridge Lock and then two restricted bridges and several Railroad bridges which closed as we got near but opened again in time for us to squeek through - Phew! That's the ICW done with for another year.
Now we are heading up the Chesapeake for some gunkholing. Tonight we are anchored alone in this small river. It is quiet and peaceful and there is not a breath of wind. Tomorrow we are headed to the York River and historic Yorktown - we are looking forward to this side trip.
Another amazing sunset.
