In Praise of the Hampton Public Docks

14 June 2010

After scrutinizing the weather forecasts every which way we decided it was a "no go" for Sunday. Secretly, I was very relieved as I had been fretting to myself that Sunday was the 13th and therefore not a good day to embark on an offshore passage. Having made the decision not to go we decided to make the most of our prolonged stay here in Hampton, VA. We pulled anchor and headed up the Hampton River to the Public Docks at the head of the river. We had a good stay here two years ago and felt in need of some "dock time". We have not been disappointed. First of all the dockage rates are very reasonable and they give a generous discount to Boat US members - which we are able to take advantage of. Then we found out that we get 3 nights for the price of 2 - which gives us dockage for less than $1 a foot. The dock staff are really helpful and cannot do enough to help us out. The location is perfect - right in the heart of Downtown Hampton - with lots of good restaurants just a block or two away. Also, there is an Enterprise Car Rental right at the dock and they give a discount to boaters - perfect as we have decided to rent a car for the day and visit Jamestown. Team Osprey lucks out again!!
