Land Ho!
22 June 2010 | Block Island, RI
We left Atlantic City at daybreak and headed back out to continue our Northwards trek. We found calm seas and just enough wind to sail - for half an hour! Then we had to turn on the iron jenny to help push us along. We set a course for Block Island a mere 170 miles away! Our route soon took us out of sight of land and it was a beautiful, clear blue day, a good one to be out on the ocean. We made steady progress and crossed 5 of the 6 shipping lanes into New York Harbor in the daylight hours. It was dark by the time we reached the sixth lane and of course this was the only one where we encountered traffic. Thankfully, with AIS, all the guess work involved with these big boys is now gone. Dawn found us just within sight of the south shore of Long Island and we turned more to the East to reach Montauk Point. There, on the horizon, was our landfall, Block Island. It is fitting to land here after all these months. We left Block on October 12th 2009, 3,635 nautical miles later - we are back!
