Fog Bound in Christmas Cove

13 July 2010
Tuesday, July 13th

On Monday we woke up to clear skies and calm winds so we made ship shape for travel and headed out of the Basin. The lobster pots were all still there. Not quite enough wind to sail but we had a pleasant journey nonetheless. We headed over here to Christmas Cove, another of our favorite spots. This picturesque cove was named by Capt. John Smith (he of Jamestown fame) when he put in here on Christmas 1614. This is a unique spot - completely protected and surrounded by lovely homes on the rocky shores. Thanks to the Coveside Inn there are a few transients moorings for rent which enables people like us to enjoy this place. There is surely not enough room amongst all the beautiful boats here to anchor. Once we got in and safely tied up we made a quick call to Corning and Tita from "Blessed Spirit" as they live not far away. We were delighted that they were free and willing to drive down to meet us, even though Corning had just arrived home from a business trip to Brazil. We had cocktails on the deck overlooking the harbor followed by a delicious dinner in the Restaurant - it was great to see our dear friends again and we hope to see them again soon now that we will all be in Maine for the Summer. We were very envious to hear Corning and Tita talk of their plans to head South again this winter. Sadly, we will not be joining them this year. After a few too many cocktails we said goodbye to the crew of Blessed Spirit and dinghied back to Osprey for a sound night's sleep. This morning we awoke to dense fog - too thick for us to go anywhere. So we spent a pleasant day in this peaceful spot, reading and talking and just generally reflecting on this amazing journey we have made.
