A trip up Penobscot Bay

25 July 2010 | Wooden Boat School, Brooklin, ME
Sunday July 25th

As we expected it was foggy when we woke up this morning. So we had a leisurely coffee / tea in the cockpit and waited for it to clear which it gradually did. We set off up Penobscot Bay and were in awe of our surroundings. There was still fog swirling around which just added to the beauty of the day. We are almost giddy to realise that this will be our cruising ground for the next several years. We wound our way around pine crusted islands, dodged the many seals and delighted at the numerous porpoises - which are tiny compared to the spotted dolphins we are used to seeing further South. We made our way to the North West end of Eggemoggin Reach and managed to sail some of the way down the reach but the wind was very gentle and fluky so we ended up turning the trusty Yanmar back on else we would never have reached our destination. We arrived at the Wooden Boat School and nestled amongst the beautiful boats that lie on moorings here. We were in time to head ashore for a quick walk around the grounds and poke our noses into the school sheds - it is all very interesting and I know Tom would love to come and do some of the courses offered here. Then back to Osprey for a cup of tea, cockpit showers and cocktails after making preps for supper. Then an early night ready for tomorrows adventures.
