Heading East!

27 July 2010 | Northeast Harbor, Mount Dessert Island, ME
Monday July 26th

We got up early this morning to a clear and crisp day. We checked the weather forecast and were a little alarmed to hear that the winds were forecast to be 15 - 20 knots gusting to 30 - way more than I like to be venturing out in. However, although the wind was blowing, it was not too vigorous for us to poke our noses out. Our destination today was Northeast Harbor - another of our long time favorites. This trip is turning to be a really nostalgic one as we revisit all our favorite spots from our previous Maine cruises - all done in "little" Osprey, our Tartan 34, between the years of 2002 and 2006. We had a good ride with the wind mostly behind us giving us an easy downwind sail. Once again we just delight in being out and about in such beautiful waters. The wind is cold and salty when it blows across the ocean and warm and pine scented if it blows over land - a heady mix indeed. We passed the Bass Harbor Light, crossing the bar it marks, just as the wind started to pick up. Thankfully we had only a few more miles to go once we turned towards Mount Dessert Island as the winds were funneling down off the mountains with gusto! We made our way into Northeast Harbor and found it as beautiful as we remembered. Things are very well organized here and a quick call to the Harbormaster had the mooring agent meeting us in his skiff and guiding us to a secure mooring for the night. After a quick lunch we headed ashore and strolled down the main street doing some shopping along the way. All our favorite shops are still here and the Pine Tree Market is a treat!
