Still in NorthEast Harbor
12 July 2011
Well, in true Osprey fashion we have become ensconced in wonderful Northeast Harbor on Mount Dessert. We have now been here five nights! But we have had such a wonderful time - it is hard to move on. We have availed ourselves of the frequent, free buses (funded by L.L.Bean - Thankyou!) that will take you all over the island, so providing easy access to the Acadia National Park and some of the other towns. On Sunday we took the bus to Bar Harbor and spent a pleasant morning shopping. Yesterday we took the bus into the park to Bubble Pond. Here we found the carriage path leading around Eagle Lake. Tom is training for his next marathon, so he proceeded to run the 6 miles around the lake - twice! I jogged half way around and proceeded to walk the rest. Thinking it would be more scenic, I left the carriage path and took the hiking trail around the perimeter of the lake itself. To begin with, this was indeed very scenic but I soon found myself in the midst of a somewhat strenuous hiking trail which involved a lot of leaping from boulder to boulder and scrambling up rocky precipices! I realized that this was perhaps not the best route to have taken alone, especially as the route was sparingly marked with an occasional blob of blue paint on the odd pebble here and there! I found my self getting deeper and deeper into the pine trees with only the lake itself to provide any kind of orientation. I was not cheered to spot the occasional wolf print in the soft soil!!! Needless to say I did find my way back to our starting point and was much relieved to meet back up with Tom.
Tomorrow we are determined to break away - we plan on heading East but it may be too foggy. We shall see what the morning brings.
