We did manage to break away from Northeast Harbor today. The day started clear and bright with a forecast NW West wind - perfect for traveling Down East. We dropped our lines shortly after 8.00am and were soon sailing along under full canvas. This was too good to be true of course and the wind died down after an hour and a half. Ever the optimists we motored on, hoping the winds would fill back in. Of course they never did and we ended up motoring the rest of the way to Roque Island, a trip of only 40 miles but made slightly more tedious as we were against the tide the whole day which slowed us down somewhat. Just as we closed in on our landfall the skies darkened and the heavens opened and gave us a jolly good drenching - pretty miserable. Thankfully, that passed fairly quickly and we made our way into the natural harbor here at Roque Island. We found only one other small sailboat here so there was plenty of room to pick our anchoring spot. Rejuvenated by a quick cup of tea we were able to rejoice in this special place. Completely devoid of any sign of human habitation, our only company this evening was a couple of curious seals. We're looking forward to walking the shoreline tomorrow.
