Stamping out disease in Maine

13 October 2008
My first week of work has sped by in no time. I have had a good week. The Hospital is wonderful, everyone is very friendly and very willing to help the newbie find her way around. So far my schedule has not been too onerous although Sunday night was pretty busy and resulted in some sleep deprivation. The consolation was the food. As the evening wore on with no end in sight, the nursing Supervisor offered to get me some supper from the cafeteria. Of course, me being someone who will rarely turn down the opportunity to eat, I gratefully accepted his offer. At previous hospitals such a request would result in the delivery of a limp sandwich containing a form of white mystery meat. Here, I was delighted to get a fresh lobster roll stuffed full of lobster meat - absolutely delicious and better than the supper I would have fixed for myself. I hope I get called in more often!

I am positively reveling in the apartment. I must be careful not to get too used to such luxuries as a dishwasher, big screen TV with DVD player and a washer/dryer just down the hallway (instead of 2 miles down the road!). It is also sheer luxury to have a car and be able to visit the grocery store whenever needed. The town of Skowhegan is providing me with everything we shall need for the winter. Today I joined the local fitness center (free to hospital employees!) and Saturday I went to the Farmer's market. This was a small affair but is year round which will be great - so I now have fresh local veg in the fridge, a pot of local raw honey and several pieces of the most delicious locally made cheeses. Best of all is that there is a free range butcher who brings large coolers stacked full of vacuum packed frozen meats. I bought the most enormous ham steak I have ever seen - "from a big pig"! I can't wait till Tom gets here so we can start eating the free range chickens and beef.
