Getting ready for launch

24 May 2009 | Norton's Marina

I can't believe that it is almost the end of May already, with Memorial Day (the unofficial start of Summer) tomorrow. We have been hard at work on Osprey taking advantage of every hour of dry weather that has come our way. The picture shows the preparations for raising the waterline. First of all we had to sand off the lower part of the green boot stripe - the paint had bubbled from being underwater, so it was easy to determine where the new waterline should be. It took many hours of careful sanding to get all the paint off but leaving the underlying gelcoat intact. Once that was done we had to measure off the new waterline - we decided a 2" raise should be enough. Once all the measuring was done we applied masking tape along the new waterline - this was harder than it sounds because every little waver in the line looked dreadful. Then I applied four coats of Barrier Coat and two coats of antifouling bottom paint - which I was able to do in two days thanks to a stretch of brilliant weather. Now that it is all done we are pleased with our work - and just hope that we raised the line enough!! I am now tackling some gelcoat repair on the topsides - a souvenir from a barnacle encrusted piling in St Augustine. This was something I had not looked forward to and with good reason as it turns out. I now know how not to repair gelcoat but thanks to some help from one of the boatyard guys I think I am on the right track at last. In the meantime Tom has had the lovely job of fixing some minor damage to the keel - we assume from our run in with the coral head in Snake Cay. The final job will be to repaint a new green boot stripe, which again will require numerous coats and a stretch of dry weather. Then we should be ready for launch. The engine will be arriving this week so will be on site for installation as soon as we are back in the water.

Besides all the hard work on Osprey - we had a wonderful, week long, sojourn in Martha's Vineyard - but that will be the topic of a separate post once I have the pictures!
