August 31. Adventure Cove to Tofino, Clayoquot Sound (49 7.2N, 125 47.6W)
We get up early and ride the last of the ebb tide out Lemmens Inlet. As it usually does, the northwest wind died during the night and it's now calm. We aren't sure whether we're going to stop in Tofino or skip it and go on down the coast to Ucluelet. But when we get to Tofino, we find quiet water and a space at the dock that's just Osprey's size. We decide to stay.
We spend the day shopping at a real grocery store (the Tofino co-op) and walking around town showing my book to the several stores that sell books. I'm discouraged by the number of stores that haven't even heard of my book in the very area it's about, but encouraged by their enthusiasm once they see it.
Tofino is full of teens and 20-somethings. Many of the young women wear high heeled sandals which seem out of place on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. That evening we drop in at the DeVaults, who moved here from Nuchatlitz up north. Only the two teenagers, Janine and Evan, are there. Janine is just back from camping and I'm glad to see she's not wearing high-heeled sandals.
