Baja Ha-Ha Leg 3 Recap
09 November 2023
• Cabo San Lucas
by Allan Alexopulos
The morning of our departure was interrupted at 4:30am by Chubasco winds screaming into the anchorage, with sustained 25 knots and gusts to 40. Several boats' anchors dragged and at least one had to be cut and was left on the bottom. Our start was delayed from 7 to 11 am while the winds calmed a bit. Once we got out there it was a sleigh ride with 25 knots sustained, double reefed main and reefed genoa.
For the first time on the trip we sailed more than we motored, given the excellent conditions. The wind died at night as usual and the seas calmed, allowing good sleep for the crew and plenty of time to get the boat prepared for Cabo. As we neared Cabo, we learned that we snagged a rare slip in the marina, which is a huge benefit for ease of getting to land, as the majority of the fleet is anchored out in the choppy waters of Cabo San Lucas. The only reason we got the slip is we signed up very early for the rally, and as entry 10, we lucked out. A total of 20 out of the fleet likely got slips.
As is the tradition, the fleet descended upon Squid Row last night, dancing up a storm. Rina, who LOVES to dance, had a great time. As is the norm however, as the locals and and millennials took over after 10pm as the boomer and gen x cruisers, making quite a sight. "Cruisers midnight" is ~9pm so we were out well past our bed time.
Leg 3 Stats: 181 Miles, 15 hours of sailing and 11 of motorsailing
