Riding out a norther at Isla Partida

After dropping Alyssa and Eric off in La Paz, Rina and I headed to Isla Partida for some down time. A norther was expected over the coming days and we were confident we could ride it out at the right location in the right anchorage.

For 3 days, 20 knot winds, with gusts to 30, buffeted the anchorage. We were fine until our last morning, when our anchor alarm went off at 5:30am, and the boat's normal motion changed, with winds on the beam. Rina and I jumped out of bed as the sky just started to lighten, and found that our bridle had chafed through. On a catamaran, a nylon line from each hull connected to a chain hook on the anchor rode keeps the boat from dancing from side to side. As far as we could tell, one of the splices came apart from the constant flexing. The bridle is 7 years and we knew it was tired.

We were able to pull a spare bridle leg out and attach it to the chain hook, with Rina at the helm with both engines at 2000 rpms to take enough stress of the anchor rode for me to make repairs. 30 minutes later we were done and went back to bed.

Thanks to Eric for the great shot of iliohale in Ensenada El Cardinal
