Painted Pier

20 May 2012
David
We left Horta at 1:00pm today heading for Sao Miguel. Our stay was great and hopefully I’ll be able to return here once again. It really is a magical island. Two days ago we rented a car and drove all the way around the island. There is a caldera that is incredible and a volcano also. The cedar forests are as thick as any I’ve ever seen. A lot of the island is farmed or used for grazing cattle.

Yesterday was a work day as we had put it off too long. I restrung the trampolines and Dave repaired the main halyard winch. It works but has a broken part and I’ll need to figure out how to order it. We also washed down the engines and did some general cleaning also. The afternoon brought the Champion’s League Football game and Dave’s favorite team, Chelsea, won in sudden death. It was pretty exciting for 10 minutes out of the 120 they played.

We also did our painting on the pier. A tradition in Horta has been to paint something on the pier and we did a great job of it. Many passerby’s commented about the detail. We didn’t finish until noon today, then just jumped on the boat and left. Right now we are sailing between Pico and Sao George. It is by far the best sailing day of the trip so far and I’m enjoying the calmness of it. For the first time I can use my computer outside in the cockpit and have the sun warm my back. We should arrive around 2:00pm tomorrow and then Stosh leaves the next day. I met a great family yesterday who spent some time detailing all the places we have to visit.

Sailing Route

Aldarion was the Heir to the King of Númenor. He was a great captain and adventurer, to the dismay of his father, who wished his son to spend his youth on the island he would one day rule. Aldarion, though, felt the call of the sea, and he built himself a vast ship, larger than any that had been seen at that time. He called it PALARRAN, an Elvish name meaning 'Far-Wanderer', and in it he journeyed the Great Sea to Middle-Earth. JRR Tolkien, The Silmarillion
