Out and about in Greece

20 April 2014 | Sounio Greece
fine then rain
Out and about in Greece
Since our last tourist venture we have been to Sounio by taxi (€10 and 8 by irregular bus). the day started off sunny but still the wind is crisp, so jackets go for the trip as well. Cape Suonio is where the temple of Poseidon is located. Very imposing on the cape and must have appeared threatening to invading forces from the sea. These are the waters sailed by Jason and the Argonauts in their search for the golden fleece and by Odysseus on his way home from the Trojan War. The ruins are still an important attraction and the tour buses bring their passengers then have to find parking spaces. While we were there we had a coffee after our inspection and joined a group of cyclists in lycra who were finishing a ride at the cafe overlooking the sea. Two young girls in skimpy shorts were handing out free tins of a new beer and lemon much like our shandy at thome so as well as the fellows consuming a couple we had 6 to bring back home.
Now getting home was something. Liz spotted a bus like our line so we hurried down and yes it was going to Lavrio. Hop on but we can't go anywhere because the cars have parked in the road. The driver of a tourist bus helped round up a couple of young police men who thought it a big joke. Finally the offending driver, arms waving and lips going ninety to the dozen, hopped in and drove away with a wave from the police men. So the bus can now move but hairraising stuff trying to miss the parked cars as the driver slowly nudged his way through. Once onto the road it was not much different as the driver would sound his horn coming to the many narrow bends, but the approaching traffic, with windows up and loud Greek music blaring more often than not couldn't hear and had to make abrupt turns into the bank, driveways ar just stop and leave the poor bus driver to manouvre around. Our side of the road was the sea edge and they don't have barriers here. We were sitting in the front seats behind the driver so had our hearts in our mouths most of the trip. we certainly complimented the driver on his driving skills when we got off. It was early afternoon with the first drops of rain causing a dash for the boat. The next few days were wet, windy and not pleasant at all.
