Isola di Ischia
03 August 2014

We anchored at Castello d'Ischia, an islet with a very intact Aragonese castle on it and is connected to the island by a causeway. Ischia is the largest and most populated of the islands in the Bay of Naples. Since the Greeks decided to create the first settlement in 8th century BC,Ischia has occupied a strategic position on the central Mediterranean trade routes for more than two thousand years. It has only been in recent times that excavations have shown port structures, mooring quays and, water collecting tanks and residential buildings hidden between rocks and meadows of posidonia sea grass ( protected here) also known as Neptune Grass. We explored the town and surrounds and thought we might visit the castle but we decided the entry fee of €10 each was a bit much for another look at ruins. Pity as there weren't many tourists going in. Ischia is the equivalent of Capri in numbers of tourists but a much more family oriented flavour. Check out their taxis..makes for a friendly atmosphere. Of course the choice of sun bathing is on pebbles, rocks and slabs of concrete. But they love the water and sun.OH! And they have great ice cream.
The rest of the was spent swimming off the back of the yacht doing what all the day trippers do when they come, anchor, swim, eat, drink then leave about 6pm. A much more enjoyable stay than Capri.
