Ibiza

21 September 2014 | Cala Vedella
Ibiza
Glen had his visit to a doctor and had a sun spot taken off his leg. With no need for a return visit he assured us he was fine for a move to the island of Ibiza (pronounce that Ibitha) on Friday. 0735 with cloudy skies and lumpy sea we started with sails up but the 5 -7 knt wind demanded we use the motors as well. By midday the sails were down and the motors on for the remainder of the trip. We anchored for the night at Cala Sant Vincent, a small resort style village after a 50 nm trip. Next day a short trip to just north of the Puerto de Ibiza marina precinct, with quite a few yachts already there. We took the dinghy trip ashore, Glen with his leg in a plastic bag which proved not to be needed as we found a dock. A walk around the waterfront to the main tourist area where the ferries arrive almost as frequently as the planes overhead. A couple of marinas catering to the super yachts as well as small fry like us are spread around the bay. Shades of the streets of Taormina in Sicily. Alleys of stalls of expensive to tacky wares all making the atmosphere very touristy. The old walled cathedral area was a delight and very well preserved and clean. After a climb to the top of the wall the views of the port and surrounds were not to be missed. Monday’s weather forecast looks like good conditions for the sail back to the mainland so we thought to shorten up the trip we would move to the western side of the island for Sunday night and an early start next day. Again left the anchorage with cloud and a blanket of the horrible brown from Africa. The boat is covered and I’m not a happy little vegemite. Anyway we looked at a couple of prospective anchorages, one in company with “Vertigo” a 67 metre luxury ketch but the water was too deep for us to anchor so we continued to Cala Vedella. We have bucketed salt water to wash the fallout off and now the sun has come out….better day tomorrow hopefully.
