Tarifa
18 October 2014

The work is done....a few days to make sure all is okay before we head off on Sunday morning early.....maybe not as early as we would like as the Easterly winds that we want to get out the Gibralta Strait, also bring heavy fog. Last night fog horns from the heavy shipping were sounding all around the harbour. We did a bus trip to Tarifa yesterday and the whole story of our experience will have to wait for another time...Tarifa is the southernmost point of the mainland and has huge wind farms. In fact it also has a high suicide rate because of the constant strong winds. The old town area and the castle told of its history. The name dates back to 710 AD. The city occupies a strategic place in a legendary zone, "The Pillars of Hercules", once thought to be the end of the world by sailors of antiquity. The castle preserved it's military function and in 1989 it was placed in civil hands beginning with its restoration and archaeological work. We are off to a bull fight tonight. They don't hurt the bulls we are told so we'll see.
