Leaving the US Virgin Islands
10 March 2015 | Off the coast of St Thomas
As we are leaving , I thought I' d enlighten you with some more trivia about the place. The capital, Charlotte Amalie was originally named Fort Christian then as the place grew it was renamed Taphus from Greek mythology. Some say that there is a second meaning analogous to "beer hall" which coincidentally reflected its mid-20th century reputation. In 1691 it was renamed after the wife of Denmark's King Christian V.
In 1927 residents were granted US citizenship but it wasn't until 1970 they could vote for their own Governor and 1972 a delegate to the US Congress. Still they have no vote in national elections, nor does their representative in Washington have a vote on the floor of the house. How about that for a democratic country?
We will be in Culebra an island belonging to Puerto Rico around lunch time.
