Palm trees, sand, crystal clear water

08 April 2015 | Cayos Coco Bandero
Leaving Cartagena we had a mild sea and not much wind to start, but by 1000 it had increased to 10 - 15 knts on the beam.... Perfect sailing conditions for a cat. We settled in for the day/ night/ day sail to the San Blas Islands. Our last trip was a hairy one to say the least and the worst part of our trip, but this time the weather behaved itself. Not to remain as an immemorial event this time, the stretch of water gave us another kind of drama. Around 0100 next morning, the electrics to the control panel went dead.....this meant no auto pilot, no light in the compass and no depth soundings coming into coral reefs. So hand steering was in order and at night with only the plotter for a heading, I'm not a good night helms-person. Poor old Captain Gary had the job until daylight when I took over while he looked for a probable cause. Around 0730 he found where the gremlins had been at work and bingo we were back in action with all systems go. Very tiring that helm work so to say we were exhausted when we dropped the anchor at the Cayo Coco Bandero. Clean air and water.....what a contrast from where we came from. We had a visit the next day from 2 Kuna Indian ladies in their ulu ( dugout canoe)......paddling, no motor. I'll do a blog about the Kuna Indians separate so as not to make this an epic.
