Niue
24 August 2015 | Aloft Niue

Another night sail to Niue leaving at lunch time. They now have 18 moorings which you have to take as it is too deep to anchor. Several of the boats from Beveridge Reef have arrived. To clear in we have to take our dinghy to the concrete wharf where it gets lifted out by crane and parked on the wharf. The health and customs staff deal with you on the dock and then you have 24 hrs of duty free shopping in the bond store. Gary had been hanging out for a pie which we had eaten daily on our last visit and he had been telling everyone about them....well of course they are no more. To say he was disappointed was an understatement. Anyway we hired a car and did the drive around the island visiting their numerous caves and whale watch places. The whales are on the move and are around the anchorage daily and you can hear them singing in the night. We also visited a local village show. No sideshow alley or rides, just food and traditional dancing and spear throwing. But again we enjoyed our stay on this coral island. Total population under 2000 with their own government but heavily reliant on Australia and New Zealand financially.
