We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Heading back to Fiji

Larry Nelson
We have visited just about everyone in the Pacific Northwest and enjoyed the hospitality of many old friends. Now it is about time to return to Fiji. We leave the 27th of August at 6 am but don't arrive until 5 am on August 29. That includes a 13 hour layover, a 12 hour flight, and a day lost when crossing the date line. Hopefully, Panta Rhei is still afloat. We did have friends visit her and report that so far all was good. It was a great relief to hear it.

I can report that it is difficult to leave the "land of everything" when it is also the land where most of our friends live. But we have friends in Fiji too and returning to them will also be nice. We are acquiring somewhat of a world perspective. And as long as the money holds out maybe we can return again? Jet airplanes do shrink the distance. In order to really appreciate that, try crossing an ocean in a sailboat, then fly home.

Those of you staying behind might like to know some of our base conclusions:

1. The US has more of everything
2. Mostly, things cost substantially less here than anywhere else in the world. People who say it is cheaper overseas aren't comparing equal standards of living.
3. The internet combined with cellular telephone has dramatically changed the world, reaching even places highly resistant to outside influences (most 3rd world countries). The people that offer services for our boat may not have chicken to go with their rice for lunch, but they have a cell phone.
4. It is hot near the equator.
