Good News-Bad News

Hello to all our yachtie friends, it is so long again since I have posted a blog, but the moment has at last arrived that I can talk to you all.

Home!!

The last lap, so we left Garry’s Anchorage at 5.50am to catch the incoming tide to cross the bar. No wind at all. We started down the “mad mile” towards the bar crossing – not for the faint hearted today, it was like a washing machine, however the largest wave we saw was about 3 metres. Finally [...]

Yankee Jack Creek

Off yet again at 5.45 am, I was almost sleepwalking as the skipper did his usual, go, go, now.........

29 October 2011 | Bundaberg

Nearly Home

We had a lovely quiet day in the creek, we even played cards and Scrabble, beaten again!!!

27 October 2011 | Pancake Creek

Dawn Start

Up at 4.30am [we must be mad]! To get to Pancake Creek before tomorrow, when a S Easter is forecast, means a very long haul today. We will pass Cape Capricorn at about 10am before sailing down the outside of Curtis Island and Gladstone etc.

Another Ripper!!

Another day, this time up at 5am and underway at 5.40am. The water is like oil, not a breath of wind. The clouds are quite heavy at present, but it is very early yet.

I have thought about our last two years cruising since we left Darwin.
The number one thought being is that there is very little wind, except in quite severe, but short lived squalls. Therefore after witnessing many boats have engine problems, even one spending weeks on the hard waiting for a new engine to arrive from Australia, {being unavailable here}. The cost alone is bad enough, not forgetting the weeks lost. The thought therefore is, if you engine is at all questionable, replace BEFORE you leave. Spares for everything is also a good idea, even some new sheets and lines, {they are dear over hear and difficult to get, only really available at Roly Tasker Phukett}.
Apart from all that our experience is that refurbishment of timber, fibreglass, teak decks, and especially awnings and upholstery is amazingly inexpensive and beautifully done.
We can recommend Boat Lagoon in Thailand for all work on the spot. Also This Way Up a Catamaran, had a complete strip down and re-paint in Satun, Thailand, which Dave found to be slightly cheaper. However the downside is there you are rather far from everything. In Boat Lagoon ,you can rent a furnished unit on site, complete with large swimming pool, { which you need after a HOT day working on the hard}. This for a very reasonable cost, complete also with air con, whilst your work is completed swiftly! Any further details we can supply.
Another thought, pumps are often cheaper than Aus, and in Langkawi, items from USA can be imported DUTY FREE into Rebak or Telaga Marinas.
Today we have done 75 miles in easy conditions, but with current agaist us of up tp 1.5kts
Now a quiet drink just outside Kinabatangan River entrance, spag bol a DVD and sleep.
