Good News-Bad News

Hello to all our yachtie friends, it is so long again since I have posted a blog, but the moment has at last arrived that I can talk to you all.

Home!!

The last lap, so we left Garry’s Anchorage at 5.50am to catch the incoming tide to cross the bar. No wind at all. We started down the “mad mile” towards the bar crossing – not for the faint hearted today, it was like a washing machine, however the largest wave we saw was about 3 metres. Finally [...]

Yankee Jack Creek

Off yet again at 5.45 am, I was almost sleepwalking as the skipper did his usual, go, go, now.........

29 October 2011 | Bundaberg

Nearly Home

We had a lovely quiet day in the creek, we even played cards and Scrabble, beaten again!!!

27 October 2011 | Pancake Creek

Dawn Start

Up at 4.30am [we must be mad]! To get to Pancake Creek before tomorrow, when a S Easter is forecast, means a very long haul today. We will pass Cape Capricorn at about 10am before sailing down the outside of Curtis Island and Gladstone etc.

Another Ripper!!

Another day, this time up at 5am and underway at 5.40am. The water is like oil, not a breath of wind. The clouds are quite heavy at present, but it is very early yet.

A very rough ride

Very Windy
The last week has flown by, and we have not done very much at all. Most days it blew 25/30. Irene and Richard had one snorkel only. Sadly, a lot of time was spent aboard playing cards or scrabble. The weed on the hull here grows an inch a day!

All the yachties went for a tour of the Lizard Island Research Station, which was very interesting as usual. We all then purchased the obligatory t-shirt and beer cooler. After that we dinghied back around to TP and got very wet into the bargain.

Today we are sailing back south to Cooktown, about 68 miles, but the current was up to 3kts against us, so the real miles should have been 50 all. We lost the rest to current. I can say now that this is the worst conditions to windward that we have had for a long time. The wind is over 30 kts more than under it. The sea is huge, and waves constantly break right over the boat. Stuart is soaked, but loving it!! Lucky it is warm up here!! There are two reefs in the main and the jib is more than half furled. Our average speed against all the above is only 6.6 miles an hour.

We will be into Cooktown in half an hour and I just hope that Irene can read this scrawl when she types for me ...

Yes, we have anchor down, and the wind is howling – what fun? Richard and Irene depart Cooktown on Saturday, and David and Sue rejoin us, then back to Lizard on Sunday.
