Good News-Bad News

Hello to all our yachtie friends, it is so long again since I have posted a blog, but the moment has at last arrived that I can talk to you all.

Home!!

The last lap, so we left Garry’s Anchorage at 5.50am to catch the incoming tide to cross the bar. No wind at all. We started down the “mad mile” towards the bar crossing – not for the faint hearted today, it was like a washing machine, however the largest wave we saw was about 3 metres. Finally [...]

Yankee Jack Creek

Off yet again at 5.45 am, I was almost sleepwalking as the skipper did his usual, go, go, now.........

Nearly Home

We had a lovely quiet day in the creek, we even played cards and Scrabble, beaten again!!!

27 October 2011 | Pancake Creek

Dawn Start

Up at 4.30am [we must be mad]! To get to Pancake Creek before tomorrow, when a S Easter is forecast, means a very long haul today. We will pass Cape Capricorn at about 10am before sailing down the outside of Curtis Island and Gladstone etc.

Another Ripper!!

Another day, this time up at 5am and underway at 5.40am. The water is like oil, not a breath of wind. The clouds are quite heavy at present, but it is very early yet.

Watch this Space!

Nanette & Stuart
Will it live up to it's name?
Off again at 6.30, missed all the fish traps, net, lines, and boats, phew, one of the group got entangled yesterday, and had to cut it all off his prop. Motor sailing, one motor, wind on the nose ....again! Yes, we have the NE Monsoon.
Only 3 or 4 storm cells yesterday, which we managed to dodge!
I have been watching the flying fish, and there seem to be two kinds. The first flies just above the waves, and the other comes up, stands on his tail and scoots along for nearly 60 or 70 metres, fascinating to watch, but too quick to take photos.
Then just as the tide turned against us we get 15+knots from the SW, God bless Huey, this is most unusual wind direction but just what we need. Sailing at 7-8 knots even with our grotty hulls.
Suddenly this large fishing boat which had been travelling behind us guns his motor and crosses just behind us, Stuart gets some photos then the fishing boat is crossing back again this time much closer - motors going flat out now as we try to get away - he is blowing black smoke and steam as he comes back a third time riding his huge bow between our transoms - Nanette calls for assistance on the VHF and "Now a Days" just a mile behind responds. Then he is alongside leaning out of his cockpit window laughing his head off. He heads off and we notice he has to stop his engine - probably overheated! Our first really frightening experience.
