Party time again
13 April 2018
We left Cienfuegos around 18:30 for our (50 nautical mile) shortish hop over to 'Cayo Guano Del Este'. Here there is a 45 metre high light house sat in the middle of the Caribbean Sea guarding a string of very little cays, which we could see from a distance for most of the night. The next morning we were looking at the rocket shaped sailing round to the leeward side to keep out of the winds, there were 2 other boats at anchor (Henry again)
Once we were settled. Henry told us all about the 6 huge lobsters that he had caught with Armando (one of the 2 lighthouse keepers) from the nearby reef. We went ashore and were invited to take a tour round the lighthouse, in temperatures approaching 30c we climbed the 248 steps up to the 2 prism light. The climb was slow but so worth it when we eventually got to the top, it was breath taking just to have a 360 degree view, looking along the thin cays that went from north to south on either side of us. There is a 57kg weight that has to be wound up the full height of the tower every morning which helps turn the lantern, the actual bulb 💡 is no bigger than my index finger, but it throws a beam of light 17 nautical miles. We were invited to help eat the lobsters on Henry's boat, the next thing there are 11 of us all chipping in with our own food 🥘 and gathering for a party 🎉 underneath the lighthouse. I supplied the music. Unfortunately for us, all the seafood had been over salted, so our expectations were dashed on the nearby reef. The evening was very pleasant with the varied company. A heavy rain shower put an early end to the festivities because all the hatchesWhen we finished we had to manhandle the dinghy off the rocky shore into the rough sea 🌊. When we woke in the morning Henry had lost his dinghy and outboard motor, because he hadn't secured it correctly (we think it's now on its way to Jamaica 🇯🇲).
We have been snorkelling quite a lot, I even came across an underwater tunnel about 4 metres long and 3 metres under the surface, I swam down and through to the other side, after our next dive Richard must have got too much sun ☀️ on his back, this and some seasickness put him in bed for 2 days. The next day we visited two other reefs searching for lobster, we only caught 1 large female, which Jane, Henry and myself shared. The next reef was about 4 metres deep and teeming with fish 🐟, there was many soft corals almost 2 metres tall which I could swim down to and through just as if I was in a forest 🌳 on land.
This morning Friday the 13th we sailed for Cayo Largo (still part of Cuba 🇨🇺)
