Las Palmas, Gran Canaria 2018
17 November 2018
This is my second visit to Gran Canaria, it feels so much better sailing in rather than on an aircraft. Nothing has changed very much since last year, so it feels like a coming home.
We booked into the marina and took on 187 litres of fuel, then we were escorted round to our berth for the next 2 weeks or so, here we will prepare the boat ⛵️ for my next crossing of the Atlantic this time to Rodney bay St Lucia.
Once we were moored up and secure, we had a cold beer each (no alcohol 🍺 whilst sailing), Roy and myself got the scooters out and went into the city to get a new SIM card, it felt weird being on solid ground again after the 4.5 days at sea getting here from Gibraltar 🇬🇮.
It's now our second day and after a great shower on land, it's down to work on the boat, whilst the lads went into the city, Roy and I installed a new 12 volt usb supply and a set of led lights under the table in the cockpit to have more soft lighting whilst sailing at night, they are programmable so we have a multitude of options, it took us over 6 hours to complete because of the cable routing and over 60 tiny solder joints that was needed to complete the electrical circuit (8 to each strip)
Roy put sushi 🍣 on the menu today, it was my first time eating it, the taste was great, it was all prepared by Roy, Christian and Toby, whilst I took up my ships cat 🐈 duties of washing up the dishes after them.
Yet another morning arrives and I'm employed polishing the boat⛵️it's very therapeutic with wax on wax off karate kid style, this I did for around 3 hours and enjoyed watching all the other people passing by, after a light lunch and a beer 🍺, Roy and I got on the scooters and went into the city. We had coffee and cakes and bought fresh bread for dinner.
I went to see my dentist before I left the UK 🇬🇧, they said all was good, but recently I've been getting some severe pain in my teeth, so I have decided to get them checked over again before I do the crossing and then it starts to cost me an arm and a leg, so I'm booked in for Tuesday afternoon.
After a breakfast of musli and coffee I set too finishing polishing the boat ⛵️again this lasted till after lunch but it's now finished as far as I'm concerned, and she looks great. Later in the day I came across an old fold up bike for sale, which I managed to buy for a measly €10 it has some (well quite a lot really) rust on it and a tatty saddle, but it goes well and is relieving the pain in my back.
Over the last few days we have been attending a whole raft of seminars, telling us all that we may need to know for our crossing of the Atlantic, everything from how to provision the boat with food, and how to correctly set up and test our iridium satellite phone. We started going to the sundowners, this is an every night occurrence and a very social gathering for anybody who is going to be crossing the Atlantic, we get 2 free drinks and a little food, on the back of tonight we were invited to the newcomers party, it was great with a live band playing brilliant music with lots of us dancing 🕺, the drink was free until 22:30, there was an almost continual flow of tapas being offered to us. It was a brilliant night, except for two idiots who decided to start a bit of fisticuffs. My evening ended at this point (01:30) only wanting to keep out of the rucks.
