Real spending power
13 January 2019
My new debit card has finally arrived, so now I'm free to move on.
I have been told that the skippers plans have changed a little, he has to now get his boat surveyed ready for selling. Two chaps came and spent a full day checking her over, I kept seeing them shaking their heads. The next morning we put the boat in the water 💦 for her sea trials. Well if something can go wrong it did. more engine mounts broken, engine failed to rev more than 1200rpm (normally 3800) the chain connecting the wheel to the rudder snapped resulting in the emergency tiller being used. So we turned around and went back to the marina with the emergency steering in place. I already had made my mind up to leave, so I asked the surveyors, if these faults were fixed would they take the boat to the Dominican Republic, their answer was a definite "I wouldn't even take her out of the bay' Nuff said.
I pretty much started packing my bags, the skipper called me up and tried to discuss how the night watches would go on our passage. At this point I told him I was leaving, he was not happy at all and tried to offer me all sorts of other incentives, to stay with him. I hung around the marina for a few hours before I jumped into a taxi 🚕 then spent the night in a hotel 🏨 before catching my flight to Guatemala 🇬🇹 . So I can say I have had early use of my new debit card 💳. I now see that he is looking for other crew, but there is nothing I can do about that.
