A Trip to Bounty-ful

08 April 2010 | Baltimore, MD
Toni/Windy
We welcomed the HMS Bounty to Baltimore today. She came in under sail, which as you can see is just beautiful. Very windy day, but perfect for this square-rigger's entrance into the Harbor. She is here for the Annual Privateer Day, which is on Saturday, April 10. There will be pirates and even a "battle" between the Bounty and the Baltimore Pride. We won't be here to see it though, as we are land-lubbing it again this weekend.

Here is just a little info on the ship:

The Bounty was built in 1960 for MGM studios' Mutiny on the Bounty with Marlon Brando. Since then, the new Bounty has starred in several feature-length films and dozens of TV shows and historical documentaries.

The studios commissioned the ship from the shipwrights of Smith and Ruhland in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia to commission a new Bounty to be built from scratch. Completely seaworthy and built just the way it would have been 200 years before, the new Bounty was constructed from the original ship's drawings still on file in the British admiralty archives.

After filming and a worldwide promotional tour, MGM berthed the ship in St. Petersburg as a permanent tourist attraction - where she stayed until the mid-1980s. In 1986 Ted Turner acquired the MGM film library and the Bounty with it. He used it to promote his enterprises, and filmed Treasure Island with Charlton Heston in 1989.

Thank God the Tiki Bar is Open....

Toni/Sunny/bit cool in the shade
It's finally that time of year - people are out sailing, boats are coming out of storage, and the Tiki Bar is open for business!

Needless to say, we had to go. After all, we needed to celebrate the fact that we survived the worst winter in Baltimore's history. We have successfully lived aboard for almost six months, and we are still together, still working on cruising eventually. So, we had a few drinks, had some dinner, then high-tailed it back to the boat. It was a bit cool sitting in the shade in the Tiki hut. On the plus side, everything on the menu was half off till 6:00 PM. Drinks included!

Bottoms Up!

And Again!!!!!!!!

Steve/Partly Cloudy 40 Degrees
I am sure you are getting tired of seeing our snow storm updates and frankly we are getting tired of posting them. According to the weather service we have received 3 times the normal snow fall so far this winter. The latest one last night, deposited 4 - 5 inches of wet snow. The good news is that it is forecast to be sunny and will warm and up to nearly 40 today and tomorrow. Now the bad news, there is already a winter storm WARNING posted for Friday afternoon and Saturday for another major storm that could be like the December 19th storm 20" plus of snow. Stay tuned
