2014 #12

Wednesday we headed north on the Alligator River, aiming for the Virginia Cut of the ICW. But first......as we turn north onto the river, we are met with strong north winds, in the 20-27 range, making for a rather bumpy ride. Another boat, well ahead, radioed back that the Albemarle Sound was ‘not [...]

2014 #11

Another spell of unpleasant weather was being forecast, and not wanting to be stuck in Myrtle Beach, we again hopped outside and went from Winyah Bay north to Southport, NC. Rain and wind coming - time for another marina. One day to walk around the town with the azaleas and dogwoods blooming, one rainy [...]

2014 #10

We had wanted to spend a few days in Charleston, but marina space would not allow it. So after one night at anchor, not in the main Charleston harbor, we hit the ICW to head north. Saturday, April 12, we traveled from Charleston to Winyah Bay on the ICW. Became reacquainted with the shallows of several [...]

2014 #9 St Augustine-Charleston

A few days in St. Augustine stretched into almost a week at Rivers Edge Marina. Not super fancy, but very close to a lot of things, and very friendly. With friends nearby from Belum, Shearwater, and Sequence, our social calendar was not lacking. We managed to attend a Rhythm and Ribs Festival (great [...]

2014 #8 USA Again

We did our homeward-bound crossing that Wednesday and arrived in Lake Worth/Palm Beach, FL, Thursday morning, March 20. An uneventful, calm, motoring trip of 28+ hours. A day and a half to rest, recuperate, clean fuel filters, and on Saturday morning we headed back out to go north to Fort Pierce, which [...]

2014 #7 George Town to Nassau

We moved north through the Exumas and, of course, had to find a spot to protect us from some coming strong west winds. We did a tour through an area called Pipe Creek, about which everyone raves. We agree it was beautiful, but yikes, the pressure to stay in the deep areas, don’t anchor in the channel, [...]

2013 Trip - #1

23 October 2013 | Oriental, NC
So here we are.....October 22, at River Dunes Marina, north of Oriental, NC. Recommendations by friends and a 'special boat show offer' convinced us - STOP HERE.
We got a later start than hoped. Cathy, in her naivete, thought....get gack from the European trip, get the boat back home by October 1, have the luxury of about 10 days to pack and load and close up the house, leave about October 13/14. HA!!! Repairs held for our 'okay', illness, and rain (and more rain and more rain)...we got the boat back to our slip on Monday, October 14. Three and one-half days of 1) pack, 2) deliver, 3) unpack and store, 4) repeat 1-3 numerous times, and 5) close the house.....we kicked off on Friday, October 18, kind of frazzled!
Now, one note....on Friday, 10/18, we made one last visit to our ATM for cash. And what to our wandering eyes did appear? Tom's favorite breakfast...the traveling donut truck (the first and last time we saw them this season)! And to make it better, it was bank customer appreciation day so we got a free 'cup' full of mini-donuts to start off the trip. Which we shared with Kathy Becker for giving us a golf-cart ride from the house, after parking the truck, to their marina. But a nice start!
So...Friday, we made it a whole 22 miles to Deltaville. Yes, we ran aground going in (that blasted sandbar shifted since the last time). Saturday, a gray, sprinkling, rolling run to Portsmouth. Sunday we used the Virginia Cut of the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) to move south, past Coinjock, NC, to an anchorage south of Buck Island. For non-sailors, in this part of the ICW to venture right or left of a recommended route can mean a run-in with shallow water or dead-heads (broken-off trees hidden under water). So we were apprehensive, but careful, when we turned left off the route and headed toward shore. We actually carried 9-11 feet all the way in, almost 1/2 mile. It was a low wind night so it was a very calm, quiet spot - shared with about 7 other boats- none closer than another 1/2 mile. Monday took us across the Albemarle Sound (no rolling, no gusts ?!?), down the Alligator River, through the Alligator-Pungo Canal, to another very quiet anchorage in Upper Dowry Creek just past the marina. And here we are on Tuesday.
Tom has a few items to work on - his ham/SSB radio, oil & fuel filter change - we will keep busy. Plan to leave here Thursday morning.
No big problems so far. Obviously, Tom's radio antenna decided to not work; one of the valves on the head was not working 100%, but it did still work; we seem to have a colony of stink-bugs that did not know they were on a boat and up for a trip. The refrigeration is working quite well (knock on wood).
Next stop - Morehead City/Beaufort, NC.
