2014 #12

Wednesday we headed north on the Alligator River, aiming for the Virginia Cut of the ICW. But first......as we turn north onto the river, we are met with strong north winds, in the 20-27 range, making for a rather bumpy ride. Another boat, well ahead, radioed back that the Albemarle Sound was ‘not [...]

2014 #11

Another spell of unpleasant weather was being forecast, and not wanting to be stuck in Myrtle Beach, we again hopped outside and went from Winyah Bay north to Southport, NC. Rain and wind coming - time for another marina. One day to walk around the town with the azaleas and dogwoods blooming, one rainy [...]

2014 #10

We had wanted to spend a few days in Charleston, but marina space would not allow it. So after one night at anchor, not in the main Charleston harbor, we hit the ICW to head north. Saturday, April 12, we traveled from Charleston to Winyah Bay on the ICW. Became reacquainted with the shallows of several [...]

2014 #9 St Augustine-Charleston

A few days in St. Augustine stretched into almost a week at Rivers Edge Marina. Not super fancy, but very close to a lot of things, and very friendly. With friends nearby from Belum, Shearwater, and Sequence, our social calendar was not lacking. We managed to attend a Rhythm and Ribs Festival (great [...]

2014 #8 USA Again

We did our homeward-bound crossing that Wednesday and arrived in Lake Worth/Palm Beach, FL, Thursday morning, March 20. An uneventful, calm, motoring trip of 28+ hours. A day and a half to rest, recuperate, clean fuel filters, and on Saturday morning we headed back out to go north to Fort Pierce, which [...]

2014 #7 George Town to Nassau

We moved north through the Exumas and, of course, had to find a spot to protect us from some coming strong west winds. We did a tour through an area called Pipe Creek, about which everyone raves. We agree it was beautiful, but yikes, the pressure to stay in the deep areas, don’t anchor in the channel, [...]

2013 - #4

29 November 2013 | Vero Beach, FL
November 29, 2013
As I warned, I have been negligent. We actually stayed several days in Fernandina; with the wind, our reasoning was `If we leave, we end up on anchor in a more exposed location; no question...stay put’. So on Wednesday, November 6, we finally pulled out and headed south on the ICW; we hit the departure time about `just right’ because after clearing the St. John’s River, we had a strong current helping shoot us through to St. Augustine. We cleared their Bridge of Lions at 3PM, and headed onward to a little, not very protected, anchorage just off the ICW. A low wind night, so there were no problems. Thursday we made Daytona Beach, and on Friday, after a short day, we pulled into New Smyrna City Marina. We enjoyed a visit with friends, John and Mary, of MaryLee fame, who have purchased a home in the area. The promise of a car cruise-in on Saturday night led us to extend our stay one more night.
New Smyrna blocks off several blocks of their main downtown street, and locals with antiques, street rods, rat rods, and fancy foreigns drive in, park the car, and hundreds of other car enthusiasts show up to wander through the display. A lot of fun! And most of you know the Captain’s love of cars, so he was “in hog heaven”.
Sunday we left, intending on a short day to the Titusville area, but realized that arrival at noon was too much of a short day so we pushed on to Cocoa. Then Monday we pulled into Vero Beach, where we rest on a mooring.
We have rented a weekend car twice so we have done some traveling. The first weekend we attended the Waterway Radio Cruising Club picnic and met up with six (yes, 6) of our Virginia Great Wicomico Crusing Club members who drove to Florida for the event. The second weekend was just running errands, attending the movies, and a pleasant visit to the McKee Botanical Gardens (photo attached). We celebrated Thanksgiving with about 120+ other cruisers as we have in prior years - a huge covered dish smorgasbord dinner. The weather has been quite a mix. A lot of windy fronts, more rain than Florida has seen in 3 months, and one 42 degree night. But no snow or ice!
Vero Beach is also known as Velcro Beach, because it becomes so hard to leave. And we are living proof of that, because here we still are on November 29, and it looks like it will be at least a few more days before we consider leaving. The Captain has one more repair to make, and it is giving him fits, but success may be on the horizon.
