Tangier Island

Another 60 miles of mostly motoring took us from Colonial Beach to Tangier Island and the first real beach that we have visited in the Chesapeake. Tangier Island is a flat tiny island with a long thin beach on the shape of a "hook" like a tiny Cape Cod. Funny enough, the bay is called Cod Bay. We arrived at 4:30 and were the only boat around. There was a huge wreck in the middle of the boat that required exploring by our intrepid Alec and Roan. We quickly inflated kayaks and paddled around the wreck and then to the beach before dark. There were only birds both in the wreck and in the beach: seagulls, pelicans, cormorants and plovers. All very unhappy to see us, specially when Alec and Roan forced them to do a couple of relocations.
Back at the boat, we had an unexpected visitor while we were getting ready for dinner. A cormorant decided that our rigging look good for the night. He circled the boat few times and tried to land on somewhere in our rigging. He did not realize the number of obstacles on his way and hit some part of the rigging. Up he went circling again and another unsuccessful try at landing. Another circle and another try. We were wondering where this bird got his flying license when on his fourth try he managed to land on the second spreader - much to Alec, Roan and Marta's delight and Mark's chagrin. Mark charged on deck screaming "it will poo everywhere" and shook the shroud. This was just too much for the poor, and now, exhausted, cormorant. He took off, circled one last time and landed, at first try, on the wreck.
