Shroud Cay

21 January 2013 | Shroud Cay, Exumas
Alec Morwood-Portoles
We anchored in the center anchorage on the east side of Shroud Cay in the morning of January 21 and set off in the dinghy to find channels in the mangroves that we had been told to go look at. We went north from the boat in the dinghy to find where a channel was. We found it after a little while and motored slowly through the middle of the island with big hills on the coast and a big mangrove flat in the middle of the island. After a little while the river went out of the island on the other side and ended in a deep pool surrounded by shallow water, another part of the river went on and curved back towards where we came. We ran the dinghy up on the beach where the river came out and walked along the beach to a trail and walked up it to the top of a hill that gave us a nice view of the other side of the island. We headed back on the part of the river that didn't go to the beach (we had to weave back and forth to avoid shallow spots) and it came out on the side of the island were the boat was and we went back to the boat. Later on we recovered a towel from the bottom of the anchorage near our boat and kept it. I found the channels very interesting because there normally aren't channels that you can navigate in a dinghy through mangrove flats.
