Turks & Caicos: Roans Dive Trip

25 March 2013 | West Caicos, TCI
Roan Morwood-Portoles
I headed out for the dive boat at 8:30 AM with my dad, my brother, and my mom. Only my dad was going with me on the dive boat, because my mom and brother prefer snorkeling. So they went on a snorkeling trip. The snorkeling boat headed out first, while everybody on the dive boat was getting ready. There were about 13 people on the boat not including dive instructors. The dive instructors were Matt, Mathew, Zach, Irene, and one other that I can’t remember his name. After checking our SCUBA equipment we got under way for West Caicos, our dive site.

One hour later we arrived at West Caicos and tied to a dive mooring. The geography in Turks & Caicos is interesting. At most of the SCUBA sites there the water is about 50 feet deep and then reaches a “Wall” or "Drop-off" which is a large drop to thousands of feet, in this case from 50ft to 7,000 ft. There were 3 groups: one group with an instructor and 2 divers (they were getting certified), another group with 1 instructor and 3 divers, and finally our large group with around 7-9 people.

After getting our BC’s on Tanks, and regulators and all the equipment of scuba on we hopped in the water with our two guides, Matt and Zach. The water was very nice and so clear that you could see the bottom 50ft below. After everybody in our group was in the water, we dropped 55ft to the bottom. Then, when everybody was on the bottom, we headed towards the wall, and just before we reached the edge where it drops of to 7,000 ft., we dove down through a narrow gully, which we headed down into and out the other side on the wall. After following the wall at around 80 ft. down, we headed back up to the 55-50 ft. “underwater plain” and towards the boat, and then, up onto the deck.

We had a 1-hour break to make sure that we didn’t get residual nitrogen on our next dive. During this time we also had lunch, which consisted of a Ham or Turkey sandwich and either some Cheetos or Doritos. After the 1-hour we headed to another spot at West Caicos around 500 ft. away from our first dive. This dive was pretty much the same except that I saw 2 large Reef Sharks around 8-10 ft. long (which, believe me, look very large underwater) with sharp teeth that you could see from 20 ft. away. They didn’t bother us though and soon headed away into the big blue. Just before we were about to turn back we saw a turtle around 3 ft. long just flapping around on the bottom.

We came up on deck, and I checked the rented dive computer; I had gone to 85 ft. on the first dive and 82 ft. on the second dive. We then started our way back to the marina. Fifty minutes later we arrived at the dive dock and back to the boat, which was at South Side marina. (Unfortunately our underwater camera could only go to 40 ft. , and we didn’t want to break it going deeper. Also it is Alec’s, so we didn’t get any pictures of the dive)
