Levkas

19 May 2014 | Levkas, Ionian Islands, Greece
Marta Portoles
We had a lazy 24-hour motor-sail from Crotone to Levkas. Along the way several sets of dolphins came to play with Por Dos. They are quite funny; they rush to cross paths with the boat jumping out of the water like happy friends that have not seen you in years. One can just imagine the glee in their eyes. As in many of our overnight or longer crossings, we ended up with a bird stowing away at night. This poor soul decided to sleep on one of the lazy jacks, so every few seconds the main sail would hit the lazy jacks send him into a flurry of activity to hold on. I felt really sorry for him and his choice of perch.

Sunday evening we anchored outside the marina in the main town of Levkas. Monday we officially entered Greece, and, of course, had gyros for lunch to celebrate that it only took two hours to do the paperwork with two visits to the port police and one visit to the customs office. Interestingly the new cruising tax does not appear to have been implemented yet, as we paid a total of 35 euros for our paperwork and cruising log.

Levkas was pretty but a bit too busy so we moved to Tranquil Bay. We dropped anchor and tied to the rocks. It took us three tries to get it right (we are a bit rusty and it was a weedy bottom that did not want to cooperate with our anchor. Those are two of my best excuses but I can come up with even more :-).

The next morning, we decided that Tranquil Bay was tranquil but not clean enough to swim or run our watermaker so we sailed 9 miles to Ormos Abelike. It is one of the natural, relatively un-spoilt bays on the island of Meganisi, where we could settle down and relax for a couple of days.
