Tahaa, Bora Bora and Maupiti

25 July 2015 | Tahaa, Bora Bora and Maupiti French Polynesia
Mark Morwood (Aug-2017)
We only spent 3 nights at Tahaa, but tried 2 different anchorages, and did the drift snorkel through the coral gardens between Motu Tau Tau and Motu Maharare a couple of times. It's a great snorkel with the current over shallow coral reefs with lots of fish, and a simple walk back along the shoreline to do it again.

From Tahaa it was only a 4 hour sail over to Bora Bora where we were meeting up with Sarah and Dak. We had a relaxing time on Bora Bora with them, meeting up with Missbehaving and Seabatical while we were there. We made our way around the lagoon from the west, around to the east, and then back, keeping the spectacular peak of Bora Bora as a back drop for the whole visit. The wakeboard we had bought used in Tahiti got a great workout in various places around the lagoon!

After saying good-bye to Sarah, Dak, Andrew and Will we left Bora Bora for our last stop in French Polynesia, Maupiti on the 26th of July. It was a short 5 hour sail, made interesting by the very narrow and hard to spot entrance to the lagoon. We negotiated it without any trouble, only to have me almost drive us into a day marker while sorting out a route on the chart plotter. Always keep your head out of the cockpit!

Maupiti was a fun 5-day stop with about 10 other cruising boats in the anchorage including Miss Behaving, Tinkerbell, Shine and Family Circus. Highlight of the stay there was snorkeling with Manta Rays where they come into shallow bommies to get cleaned by cleaner wrasse.
