Race and Camping a Success!

The rain did come, and it came hard, closing Highway 1 due to flooding. But a little detour via Rte. 16, we got to the track, and all was good. The campsite was on a slope, and had drained nicely allowing us to pitch the tent and have a great little camping night. We were literally, happy campers!
The weekend turned out to be much more fun than we had ever imagined. While we were at Marsden, our electrician, Matt, (who has done some supurb work for us) introduced us to his aunt and uncle, Carole and Chris. On New Year's Eve, Carole and Chris stopped by for a nice visit. None of us knew it at the time, but it turns out that we share another common interest - vintage motor racing. When we found this race event, we invited Matt to join us. He told us that he couldn't because he was participating in a surfing competition, but that Chris races a Morgan Plus 8, and that he and Carole would be there.
A few emails later, we were all set up to meet at Chris and Carole's trackside condo. They had a friend, Blair, staying with them, who was racing a Lola T342 Formula Ford. Small world. When Rod was shopping for his Formula Ford back in 1995, he had looked at a Lola T342 and had liked it very much, but had ultimately decided on the Titan Mk 5.
So, it was a very cool event. The theme of the event was a celebration of the great Kiwi driver Chris Amon, who was there driving some of the cars he made history with. A few of the cars and people that are well known at the Monterey Historics were there. The Bruce McLaren Trust was there, as were a number of McLarens. We got to participate a little by helping out Blair with a little pit assistance. In the end, it was a very special weekend shared with some very special people. It's all part of cruising then, isn't it?
(As always, there are more photos on our web album. It's the link on the right.)
