Niue Yacht Club Reunion

07 January 2012 | Auckland, New Zealand
Rod
While sailing west across the Pacific, we stopped at the small island country of Niue, located about 250 miles east of Tonga. There is no real harbor or good anchorage there. However, a series of moorings is maintained by the Niue Yacht Club who is run by Commodore Keith Vial. All passing yachties owe a great debt to Keith, and we have had the pleasure of keeping in touch with him since we left there in 2011.

Yesterday was a very special day because we got the chance to see Keith again in Auckland. He is originally from Dunedin on South Island, was here for the holidays, and suggested that we have a little reunion. It was a joy to find a little Mexican restaurant on the waterfront where we introduced Keith to Corona beer, served in a bucket, along with the requisite lime wedge, of course. Yes, he liked it. Very much.

Keith is a dear friend, and we always wondered how we might see him again since sailing east against the tradewinds is quite difficult. While in Niue, we presented him with a Pacific Puddlejump flag that he displays proudly in the Niue Yacht Club. Keeping with this tradition, we presented him yesterday with our California flag. Thank you Keith. We remain amigos para siempre.
