Still Slow

16 April 2013 | About 200 miles south of Majuro
Rod
Well, another slow day. The forecast did change. There are many little squalls and rain systems about, and these are delaying the trade winds. The good news is that tomorrow, this activity should change and bring in a little more wind and perhaps a little better angle.

We are currently approaching the island of Butaritari, Kiribati with a course that will, if unchecked, would land us on the Butaritari beach. We have been scratching our heads all day about how to get around this "obstruction". We can easily bear off to head south and then turn right once we have passed it. Or we can continue on our current course until the last 10 miles or so, and then tack back to the northeast, followed by another tack back on course in the morning. A bit of a chess game. We will work it out and will let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Today has seen a good number of squalls, some we avoided, some we punched right through. This is classic ITCZ. It too should ease up a bit. Our 24 hour distance covered is just about 100 nautical miles, nearly the same as yesterday. This is working out to be a ground speed of 4.1 to 4.2 knots. Slow for us.

I offer my apologies about this being a technical report, but these things are a big part of our life. We are well, happy and we smile alot - at each other. Lucky us, I think.

Until tomorrow, Rod and Elisabeth
