25 April 2013 | Funafuti
Rod
We are anchored in Funafuti. This place is wonderful. It is a verrrrry small country, and verrry remote. The Funifuti Visitor's Center has a brochure that calls it a "peaceful and non-commercialized environment that is ideal for escaping the globalization". We have to agree.

It really is pretty. It is an atoll, so we are anchored inside the lagoon. They have an airport (international) which doubles as a sports field and a place for people to camp on a hot night. They blow the fire whistle when an airplane is coming, so people know to get off the runway.

We met a nice young man from Japan today. He will be coming out to the boat tomorrow for lunch. His name is Yoshi., and he just arrived to Funafuti today as well - on the airplane who landed when the fire whistle blew. He flew in from Suva, Fiji, and will be here a week.

The roads here are small, but in really good condition with a line in the middle and everything. The connector roads are even smaller, about like a driveway. Everyone rides little motorbikes. Everyone - men, women, moms with little children. It is really cool. We met a guy and we will rent us his motorbike on Tuesday and tour the whole island. We expect this trip to take about an hour, but we will stretch it out the whole day. We had heard that one could rent a motorbike here, but there are no shops to do it. You just have to ask around. It's a small place.

It is clean and green. The water in the lagoon is a beautiful turquoise and many of the local guys can be seen diving for fish. The people are very friendly and outgoing. Lots of easy smiles.

Being such an out of the way remote place, not many yachts stop by. We were the only boat here when we arrived, but now another boat has arrived and another one is expected tonight. These two boats intend to stay only until Sunday, and then they press on, adn we will again be the only boat for a while. Contrast this with Majuro where in the north anchorage, there were 11 boats and more than that in the south anchorage. And Majuro is considered remote.

This all being said. There is not much excitement for tourists here. There are no surf breaks. No night clubs. Haven't seen a bar. I think there are a couple of places where one could buy a beer. So, there are not tourists here. While walking the town/village, we were the only white faces on the street. We love it.

During check in today, I had to see the Immigration and Quarantine people in the Government Building today. The people working there are very professional and helpful. This is also the President's office. He's on the third floor.

We found a little store ran by a local guy who used to work on the big ships. He has been to Sacramento, California. He sold us a jar of Vege-Mite, and a couple of ice cream cones (had one flavor - that's plenty for us). The Vege-Mite, by the way, was how we met Yoshi. He saw it, and asked if we were Australian. We like it here. Peace Rod and Elisabeth
