Welcome to the ITCZ!

August 18

Day 3. Our good friend Bob, who gives us outstanding weather routing reminded us yesterday that we do have to cross the ITCZ. This is the band of unsettled weather that is a result of the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere air masses interacting with each other. They make squalls. The ITCZ activity right now starts at latitude 10S and continues to 4S. Well, you can see that we are now in it and have had our first squall. Lots of rain, strong wind and there are many of them. Part of equatorial sailing.

The day has been good, but the near-perfect conditions we had for the past two days has changed. It was expected. At one point after a squall passing today, we had no wind at all. But now it has returned , and we are sailing right along again.

We are getting acclimated to being on passage, and the "zombie day" feeling is over. Now there is a Taiwanese fish boat somewhere out here. He is broadcasting a "test" message on his AIS, but no position or course information. They do this so no one will see where their secret fishing spot is. I roll my eyes and say "Oh brother".

OK, short and sweet. I have to go scan the horizon for that fishboat.
