Day 3

19 May 2016 | Passing Utirik
Rod
Thursday, May 19

Beautiful day! We woke up to a grey sky, but soon, the sky turned blue, the water turned from dark grey to rich cobalt blue, and we had light and easy wind. The seas even laid down a bit. We got to say good morning to the the people back in Majuro via the "Yokwei Net", and then proceeded to have a nice sailing day. We managed to pass to the east of all the islands except of the last one coming up. (Yesterday, this didn't seem possible, but the wind changed for us in the early evening.) Now the wind angle is just not there, so we have eased our heading to clear it, and Voila! We instantly had a knot and a half better speed. So, you get a good trade now and then. In the early morning (four A.M. is our estimate), we should pass the island of Bikar, the last one in the Marshalls for us to pass. Then the Marshalls will be truly behind us. The next milestone will be to pass the latitude of Hawaii, about 600 miles north. It was nice to sit outside today, as yesterday, it was just too wet. I even had to time my sitting in order to avoid getting sunburned legs! We have some fresh veggies on board, so Elisabeth made us a nice salad for lunch. A salad while underway on passage in a small yacht is a real treat, so your crew are very happy and content. We send our best to everyone, and we will report again tomorrow.
